Activity Description

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), also referred to as post-infectious encephalomyelitis, is an acute, rapidly progressive autoimmune process. This condition is characterized by demyelination in the brain and spinal cord as a result of inflammation that occurs in response to a preceding infection or immunization.

This activity reviews the typical clinical features of ADEM and discusses the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in this condition. The epidemiology and etiologies are presented, as well as the important differential diagnoses, especially other brain parenchymal inflammatory disorders. The article stresses the importance of clinical, radiological, and laboratory evaluation and management of ADEM; finally, it highlights the role of the interprofessional team in caring for patients with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify clinical features suggestive of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, recognizing encephalopathy, polyfocal central nervous system involvement, and demyelinating lesions on brain magnetic resonance imaging.

  • Differentiate acute disseminated encephalomyelitis from other central nervous system disorders, viral encephalitis, and multiple sclerosis, ensuring accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.

  • Implement clear communication with patients and their families about acute disseminated encephalomyelitis diagnosis, treatment options, potential complications, and long-term prognosis.

  • Collaborate with neurologists, radiologists, and immunologists to confirm acute disseminated encephalomyelitis diagnosis, tailor treatment plans, and ensure comprehensive patient care.
