Activity Description

Schizoid personality disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by a detachment from social relationships and a limited range of emotional expression in interpersonal settings. Individuals with schizoid personality disorder are often described as aloof, emotionally blunted, isolated, disengaged, and distant, frequently avoiding social interactions and using introversion as a defense mechanism. The disorder has complex origins, involving a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors.

This disorder can adversely affect multiple aspects of life, underscoring the need for early intervention and interdisciplinary care. Diagnosis of schizoid personality disorder is based on criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed., Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). Individuals with this disorder often present for treatment due to external pressures from family or maladaptive behaviors affecting others rather than personal distress. Management primarily focuses on reducing interpersonal conflict and stabilizing socioeconomic conditions rather than aiming for remission of the disorder. This activity demonstrates the evaluation and management of schizoid personality disorder and highlights the role of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in improving care for patients with this condition.
