Activity Description

Syphilis is a systemic, bacterial infection caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. Due to its many protean clinical manifestations, it has been named the “great imitator and mimicker.” Syphilis remains a contemporary plague that continues to afflict millions of people worldwide. The infection progresses through 4 stages (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary) and can affect virtually every organ system in the body, even many years or even decades after the original infection.

Early symptoms include the painless chancre of primary disease or the unique maculopapular rash involving the palms and soles of secondary syphilis. As the clinical manifestations are so varied, clinicians need to be constantly aware of the possibility of syphilis in the differential diagnosis of a multitude of illnesses affecting any bodily organ system and perform screening serologic testing frequently and appropriately, particularly in high-risk populations. Fortunately, the causative organism remains very sensitive to antibiotics, and benzathine penicillin G is still recommended for most stages of syphilis, although IV aqueous penicillin G is preferred for neurosyphilis.

This course will provide clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of syphilis, including its epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies. Participants will gain insights into the complexities of syphilis management, together with its medical, psychosocial, and public health implications. This activity also highlights the role of the interprofessional team in addressing the evolving landscape of syphilis and promoting the health and well-being of individuals and populations.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and dentists.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply best practice guidelines in the diagnosis of syphilis based on practices outlined by public health organizations.

  • Improve the diagnosis and treatment of syphilis through increased education of healthcare professionals about the varied clinical manifestations of syphilis.

  • Collaborate among interprofessional team members and public health officials to improve outcomes for patients affected by syphilis.
