Activity Description

Tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening emergency wherein a large air collection in the pleural space compromises respiration and cardiac function. This condition can arise from events like trauma or aggressive mechanical ventilation or resuscitation. Tension pneumothorax is a clinical diagnosis, and early recognition is life-saving in prehospital and intensive care settings. Knowledge of emergency thoracic decompression procedures is essential for all healthcare professionals.

This activity reviews the clinical manifestations of tension pneumothorax and outlines the evaluation and management strategies appropriate for this condition. This activity also highlights the importance of early intervention and the roles of the interprofessional team in improving care for patients with tension pneumothorax.
