Activity Description

Carbon monoxide toxicity occurs after breathing in excessive levels of carbon monoxide. This gas is tasteless, odorless, and colorless, and victims are usually unconscious before they realize they are being poisoned. Patients may have a headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea, tachycardia, and tachypnea. This activity outlines the evaluation and management of carbon monoxide toxicity and explains the role of the interprofessional team in improving care for patients with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Assess the etiology of carbon monoxide toxicity.

  • Evaluate the use of arterial blood gas samples with co-oximetry analysis in the evaluation of carbon monoxide toxicity.

  • Identify the use of supplemental oxygen in the treatment of carbon monoxide toxicity.

  • Communicate the importance of improving care coordination among interprofessional team members to enhance care delivery for patients with carbon monoxide toxicity.

The editors need to look this one over. Many errors and misleading information. It can probably be salvaged, but it might be easier to start over.
