Activity Description

Ultrasound guidance for intravenous access has been well-documented for more than 20 years and is now routine in many settings for nonemergent central line placement and difficult peripheral intravenous access. The proven safety and high success rate of ultrasound-guided intravenous access have led to the widespread integration of this technique in emergency departments. The procedure's ability to improve safety, increase success rates, and reduce patient discomfort makes it an invaluable tool in various clinical settings. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, and inadvertent arterial puncture, though these risks are much lower than those associated with traditional techniques due to improved blood vessel visualization.

This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners' ability to identify patients requiring ultrasound-guided intravenous access and properly perform the procedure. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the procedure's relevant anatomy, indications, contraindications, required equipment, and correct technique. Greater proficiency prepares learners to collaborate within an interprofessional team caring for patients needing safe intravenous access.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify patients benefitting from ultrasound-guided intravenous access and demonstrate proficiency in recognizing anatomical landmarks crucial for successful placement.

  • Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate indications for ultrasound-guided intravenous access based on patient condition and clinical setting.

  • Implement knowledge of required equipment and maintain competence in handling ultrasound devices for optimal vascular visualization.

  • Apply effective strategies to improve care coordination among interprofessional team members to facilitate positive outcomes for patients undergoing ultrasound-guided intravenous access.
