Activity Description

Pacemakers are medical devices designed to regulate abnormal heart rhythms by delivering electrical pulses to the heart. They are used primarily to treat bradycardia due to sinus node dysfunction or atrioventricular block, among other cardiac conditions. Pacemakers can be temporary or permanent, depending on the patient’s needs, and advancements in technology since the 1950s have greatly improved their functionality. Modern pacemakers, along with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, form a category of cardiac implantable electronic devices. While the implantation procedure is generally safe, risks such as infection, lead dislodgement, and battery depletion must be carefully managed.

In this course, participants gain a deeper understanding of pacemaker indications, coding systems, and proper device management. By familiarizing themselves with the pacemaker code, especially the lesser-known fourth and fifth positions, healthcare professionals enhance their ability to optimize device settings. Collaboration within an interprofessional team, including cardiologists, electrophysiologists, and nurses, ensures a comprehensive approach to patient care. This teamwork leads to more accurate device programming, effective monitoring, and improved clinical outcomes for patients with heart rhythm disorders.
