Activity Description

Vascular ring refers to a congenital anomaly where vascular structures encircle and compress the trachea and esophagus, leading to respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. This condition can be classified based on aortic arch-sidedness relative to the trachea and bronchi. A left aortic arch lies to the left of the trachea and passes over the left bronchus, while a right aortic arch (RAA) lies on the right, passing over the right bronchus. In a double aortic arch (DAA), 2 arches encircle both the trachea and bronchi. The most common forms are DAA or RAA with an aberrant left subclavian artery, often causing airway obstruction or dysphagia.

Participants in this course gain a thorough understanding of vascular ring anatomy, pathophysiology, and diagnostic techniques, including imaging modalities such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imagery, and echocardiography. The course emphasizes early recognition and appropriate surgical interventions tailored to each anatomical variant. Collaboration among cardiologists, radiologists, pediatricians, and cardiothoracic surgeons is crucial to ensure accurate diagnosis, effective surgical planning, and postoperative care. This interprofessional approach enhances patient outcomes by minimizing complications, improving symptom resolution, and supporting long-term respiratory and nutritional health.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.
