Activity Description

Labor is the process by which regular uterine contractions cause progressive cervical dilation and effacement, resulting in the expulsion of the fetus and other products of conception. This normal physiologic process is divided into 3 stages. The 1st stage begins with the onset of labor and ends with full cervical dilation and effacement. The 2nd stage begins with complete cervical dilation and concludes with fetal delivery. The 3rd stage begins immediately after fetal delivery and ends with placental delivery. Accurate identification of the parturient's stage of labor, appropriate support at each stage, and continuous monitoring help the healthcare team minimize unnecessary interventions and optimize maternal and fetal outcomes, including the parturient's perception of the birth experience.

This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners' proficiency in evaluating and managing normal labor. Participants will broaden their grasp of normal labor physiology and best practices for assessing and facilitating the progress of this significant event to ensure good maternal and fetal outcomes. Enhanced skills will enable clinicians to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for patients undergoing labor.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Apply the recommended evaluation and monitoring practices during spontaneous labor.

  • Differentiate abnormal from normal patterns in each stage and phase of labor.

  • Implement personalized, evidence-based protocols for managing spontaneous delivery to ensure good maternal and fetal outcomes.

  • Apply effective strategies to improve care coordination among interprofessional team members to facilitate positive outcomes for patients undergoing spontaneous labor.
