Activity Description

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed malignancies worldwide and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Many cases of CRC are associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and diet. Approximately 10% of CRC cases diagnosed are hereditary, primarily due to specific genetic mutations that increase susceptibility to CRC and other malignancies. Hereditary CRC syndromes, including familial adenomatous polyposis and Lynch syndrome, often tend to have a more aggressive course, poorer prognosis, and lower responsiveness to chemotherapy compared to sporadic CRC cases.

Diagnosis relies on clinical findings, genetic and family history, and comprehensive testing, including genetic testing, endoscopic evaluation, and imaging. Indicators of hereditary CRC include a significant family history of CRC, early-onset CRC, or multiple primary cancers in an individual. Mutations associated with hereditary CRC syndromes vary in penetrance and influence cancer risk differently. This activity reviews the most common hereditary CRC syndromes and outlines current evidence-based management approaches. This activity also highlights the essential role of interprofessional collaboration among healthcare providers in recognizing and evaluating potential genetic disorders and managing hereditary CRC syndromes effectively.


Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes, including familial adenomatous polyposis and Lynch syndrome, based on clinical and genetic indicators.

  • Apply diagnostic criteria to evaluate suspected hereditary colorectal cancer cases effectively and determine the need for further genetic evaluation.

  • Select appropriate genetic counseling resources for patients and families impacted by hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes.

  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to implement comprehensive care plans for patients with hereditary colorectal cancer and integrate surveillance, treatment, and support services.

  • Outline the pharmacologic therapy as it applies to A Review of Hereditary Colorectal Cancers
