Activity Description

Amaurosis fugax is a temporary vision loss in one eye, often described as a "curtain" or "shade" coming down over the visual field. This condition is typically a warning sign of underlying vascular disease, commonly associated with transient ischemic attacks or carotid artery disease. Understanding the causes, risk factors, and timely diagnosis of amaurosis fugax is essential for preventing more severe outcomes, such as permanent vision loss or stroke.

In this educational activity, participants will explore the clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and underlying mechanisms of amaurosis fugax. Learners will also review the importance of identifying patients at high risk for cerebrovascular events and the critical role of prompt management and referral to specialists. The activity will focus on the evaluation and diagnostic workup, including imaging techniques and laboratory assessments, to rule out potential causes. Furthermore, evidence-based treatment options will be highlighted, including antithrombotic therapies and interventions, to address the underlying vascular pathology.

Interprofessional collaboration is essential in managing amaurosis fugax, and this course emphasizes the contributions of ophthalmologists, neurologists, and primary care providers in optimizing patient care. By participating in this activity, healthcare professionals will enhance their diagnostic accuracy, improve their understanding of treatment options, and strengthen their ability to work within an interprofessional team to ensure timely, effective care for patients presenting with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Screen patients at risk for amaurosis fugax by identifying key risk factors and utilizing appropriate diagnostic tools.

  • Identify the signs and symptoms indicative of amaurosis fugax.

  • Implement personalized evidence-based interventions for managing amaurosis fugax and preventing complications.

  • Apply effective strategies to improve care coordination among interprofessional team members to facilitate positive outcomes for patients with amaurosis fugax.

  • Outline the pharmacologic therapy as it applies to Amaurosis Fugax
