Activity Description

This continuing education activity focuses on prostate cancer screening and its crucial role in reducing morbidity and mortality from this common and potentially deadly disease. Prostate cancer's global impact, particularly in the United States, is addressed, highlighting its prevalence, mortality rates, and demographic disparities. Avoiding the high morbidity and mortality associated with prostate cancer requires early diagnosis and treatment of clinically significant disease, but multiple conflicting and changing guidelines have created significant confusion regarding optimal screening strategies in various groups of men. The criteria for higher- and lower-risk groups for prostate cancer, based on age, family history, and prostate-specific antigen levels, are explained.

This activity navigates the complexities and controversies surrounding prostate cancer screening, emphasizing the need for shared decision-making between healthcare providers and patients. The significance of risk stratification, genetic testing, magnetic resonance imaging, and biomarker assays is explored as part of the current landscape in prostate cancer screening. The activity underscores the importance of an interprofessional approach to patient counseling and evaluation, providing a comprehensive understanding of when to initiate and discontinue prostate-specific antigen testing, ultimately promoting optimal shared decision-making at every stage of the screening process.
