Activity Description

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant global health challenge; the World Health Organization has set an ambitious goal to reduce TB incidence by 90% between 2015 and 2035. However, TB diagnosis, treatment, and prevention present considerable difficulties. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, TB was the most prevalent infectious disease worldwide. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of TB, has plagued humanity for millennia. Diagnostic approaches include the Mantoux skin test and the interferon-gamma release assay, which have diagnostic and predictive limitations. Advances such as molecular nucleic acid amplification tests have improved diagnostic accuracy but remain inaccessible in many high-prevalence regions. The ongoing development and implementation of new diagnostic tests aim to enhance TB detection further.

This activity introduces the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches, treatments, and prevention of latent and active TB. The treatment of TB involves complex regimens that are challenging to administer. The primary anti-TB antibiotics, developed in the mid-20th century, are essential, but recent approvals of 2 new antibiotics mark a significant advancement. Effective TB prevention and management require a coordinated effort among public health officials, primary care clinicians, and specialists, emphasizing the need for robust public health infrastructure and interprofessional collaboration to achieve global TB control and elimination goals.
