Activity Description

Flea bites are primarily caused by Siphonaptera, a group of blood-feeding wingless insects renowned for their remarkable jumping abilities. These pests are often linked to dog or cat fleas and become opportunistic feeders on humans when their preferred hosts are unavailable, such as when pets return from kennels. Flea bites manifest as pruritic papules, typically found on ankles but also appearing on other exposed body parts in infested areas. This activity aims to enhance the interprofessional team's proficiency in educating patients about flea bite prevention while augmenting practitioners' expertise in evaluating and managing these bites. By focusing on the prevention, presentation, epidemiology, and management of flea bites, the course empowers healthcare professionals to mitigate the incidence of flea-borne diseases, including plague, tularemia, cat-scratch disease, and cat flea typhus.

Siphonaptera, colloquially known as fleas, constitute a diverse order of wingless arthropods encompassing over 2000 species. Beyond being a nuisance, fleas can be vectors for various diseases, including typhus, rickettsial diseases, bubonic plague, and protozoan and helminth infestations. This activity gives healthcare professionals the knowledge to adeptly approach history-taking, conduct thorough physical examinations, and implement effective treatment strategies. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of eradicating fleas from human environments to curb the transmission of diseases to humans.
