Activity Description

Alkalosis is a pathophysiological condition characterized by the buildup of excess base or alkali in the body. Alkalosis results in an abnormally high serum pH (arterial pH greater than 7.45), termed alkalemia, forming one end of the spectrum of acid-base disorders. There is generally a loss of hydrogen ions (H+) or an excess of bicarbonate ions (HCO3), with various factors contributing to these disturbances. Alkalosis can be as life-threatening as acidosis, and severe electrolyte derangements can accompany alkalosis due to transcellular shifts, potentially resulting in rare but severe clinical disorders. Alkalosis can be either respiratory or metabolic in origin, but metabolic alkalosis is far more common than respiratory causes. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of alkalosis, highlighting the role of the interprofessional healthcare team in enhancing patient care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the pathophysiology of alkalosis.

  • Differentiate between metabolic and respiratory alkalosis based on laboratory results and patient history.

  • Implement evidence-based protocols for managing and treating alkalosis, including electrolyte correction and fluid replacement.

  • Apply effective interprofessional team strategies to improve patient outcomes.
