Activity Description

An ingrown toenail, also known as onychocryptosis, is a common condition in which the nail plate grows into the surrounding periungual skin, causing inflammation and, in many cases, infection. This condition most frequently affects the hallux, or big toe, and can occur at any age, though it is particularly prevalent among teenagers and young adults. If left untreated, an ingrown toenail can result in significant pain, discomfort, and even disability. Management options vary depending on the severity of the condition, ranging from conservative approaches, such as soaking and proper nail trimming, to surgical intervention in more severe cases. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preventing complications.

Through the course, participants learn to identify the causes, symptoms, and stages of ingrown toenails and develop skills in conservative and surgical management strategies. By collaborating with an interprofessional healthcare team, which may include podiatrists and dermatologists, the participant gains a comprehensive understanding of how different perspectives enhance patient care. This collaborative approach leads to more accurate diagnoses, timely interventions, and tailored treatment plans, ultimately improving patient outcomes by reducing the risk of complications such as infection and chronic pain.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate between conservative and surgical treatment options for ingrown toenails based on severity and patient presentation.

  • Screen patients for risk factors, such as improper nail care or trauma, that may contribute to recurrent ingrown toenails.

  • Implement evidence-based conservative treatments, including proper nail trimming techniques and infection management, to reduce the need for surgical intervention.

  • Communicate interprofessional team strategies to improve coordination and communication between health care professionals, improving patient outcomes.

One comment to add is that a complementary video of the ingrown toenail removal technique would be helpful.
