Activity Description

Spina bifida is a congenital condition resulting from incomplete closure of the neural tube during fetal development, leading to varying degrees of spinal cord and nerve damage. This defect can occur anywhere along the spine, often damaging the spinal cord and nerves. The severity of spina bifida ranges from mild forms, such as spina bifida occulta, which may be asymptomatic, to more severe types, like myelomeningocele, where spinal tissues protrude through an opening in the spine, potentially causing significant neurological impairments. Associated complications can include mobility challenges, hydrocephalus, and bowel and bladder dysfunction. Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach are crucial for effective management and improved patient outcomes.

Participants in this educational activity gain a comprehensive understanding of spina bifida, including its pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and current strategies for prevention, evaluation, and treatment. The course emphasizes the importance of interprofessional collaboration, highlighting how coordinated efforts among healthcare professionals—such as neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, urologists, physical therapists, and nurses—can prevent severe morbidity and enhance patient care. By fostering effective communication and teamwork within the healthcare team, participants learn to develop and implement comprehensive, patient-centered management plans that address the complex needs of individuals with spina bifida, ultimately improving their quality of life and functional outcomes.
