Activity Description

Shigellosis is an acute enteric infection caused by shigellae, a facultative gram-negative, anaerobic bacillus. Shigellae can be transmitted by the fecal-oral route or by direct person-to-person contact. Shigellae are less susceptible to destruction by gastric acid after ingestion; only a small inoculum, as few as 10 to 100 organisms, is required to cause disease. Shigellosis is a major cause of bacillary dysentery worldwide. The most common symptoms of shigellosis are mucoid bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and tenesmus. Shigellosis occurs globally but is most common in resource-poor countries and has a propensity for endemicity and outbreaks. People of all age groups can be affected, and although it is usually a self-limiting disease, specific populations, including extremes of age and those who are immunocompromised, are at a higher risk for developing severe disease.

This activity for healthcare professionals reviews the etiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and sequelae of shigellosis and highlights the importance of an interprofessional approach to the managements of this infectious disease.
