Activity Description

Human immunodeficiency virus-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) encompass a spectrum of neurological and cognitive impairments in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), ranging from asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment to HIV-associated dementia. These disorders were formerly termed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome dementia complex. HAND affects 4% to 15% of patients with HIV and results from HIV-mediated damage to the central nervous system. In 2007, the National Institutes of Health categorized HAND into 3 classifications to assist with clinical evaluation and management. Early recognition and intervention are crucial to managing symptoms and preventing progression to severe impairment.

Participants gain insight into the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and classifications of HAND, along with effective evaluation and management strategies. The course emphasizes the importance of routine neurocognitive monitoring in patients with HIV and explores evidence-based approaches to treatment. Collaboration with an interprofessional team, including infectious disease specialists, neurologists, nurses, and mental health professionals, enhances patient outcomes through comprehensive care and tailored interventions.
