Activity Description

Pulmonary emphysema, a progressive form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation resulting from airway or alveolar damage. These abnormalities are typically caused by prolonged exposure to harmful particles or gases, such as those from smoking or environmental pollutants. This condition destroys alveolar walls, air trapping, and impaired gas exchange, resulting in symptoms like shortness of breath, chronic cough, and reduced exercise tolerance. Emphysema significantly impacts quality of life and requires a comprehensive approach to management.

This activity provides an in-depth review of the causes, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation of pulmonary emphysema. It also emphasizes the critical role of an interprofessional healthcare team in delivering effective care. Through evidence-based insights, the activity aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge necessary to optimize patient outcomes, including symptom management, risk factor modification, and addressing complications.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Typographic/editing errors: in the evaluation section, it says "FeV1/FVC less than 0.07 is diagnostic..." This should probably read 0.70. In the management section it reads "management should include beta blockers and anticholinergics" This should read "beta agonists...."
