Activity Description

Colorectal cancer is an increasingly important public health problem in the United States and worldwide. Colorectal cancers have the highest incidence among malignancies after lung cancer, breast cancer in women, and prostate cancer in men. This condition is the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. Despite sharing similar disease biology, colon and rectal cancers are considered separately, given the diagnostic technique and treatment differences. Colon cancer is often sporadic and related to risk factors such as age, race, diet, and the presence of inflammatory bowel disease. Hereditary colon malignancies are most commonly associated with Lynch syndrome and genetic polyposis syndromes. Screening colonoscopy is critical in identifying premalignant and early-stage lesions. Surgery is the mainstay of curative treatment, with chemotherapy being a necessary adjunct. Radiation plays an integral role in rectal cancer but is less commonly used to treat colon cancer.

This activity for healthcare professionals enhances learners' competence in recognizing symptoms, providing a timely diagnosis, and using best practices when managing colorectal cancer. The course emphasizes the critical importance of screening, particularly colonoscopy, for early detection and prevention and the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for managing localized and metastatic disease. Through evidence-based discussion, participants explore surgical techniques, the role of adjuvant and systemic therapies, and the integration of targeted biologic and immune checkpoint inhibitors into treatment plans. Special attention is given to interdisciplinary collaboration, tailored approaches for high-risk patient populations, and strategies to optimize patient outcomes while minimizing treatment-related complications. By enhancing diagnostic precision, treatment planning, and team-based care, this activity equips healthcare professionals with the confidence to address the evolving challenges of colorectal cancer management.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and dentists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Select appropriate screening strategies and diagnostic tools to improve the timely identification of colorectal cancer and its precursors.

  • Apply evidence-based guidelines to assess and interpret clinical findings for early detection and accurate staging of colorectal cancer.

  • Differentiate between the roles of adjuvant therapies, biologics, and immune checkpoint inhibitors in managing high-risk and metastatic colorectal cancer.

  • Collaborate with interprofessional team members, including clinicians, nutritionists, dieticians, palliative service, social workers, and case managers, to recognize symptoms, provide timely diagnosis, and coordinate patient care for patients with colon cancer.
