Activity Description

Animal bites represent a significant portion of emergency department visits in the United States, contributing to approximately 1% of cases annually. These injuries range from superficial to severe, with potential complications such as infection, disfigurement, and, in rare cases, fatalities. Dog and cat bites dominate this category, accounting for over 95% of all animal bite wounds seen in emergency settings. Prompt and thorough evaluation of these injuries is critical to prevent complications, focusing on infection prevention, tetanus immunization, and appropriate treatment strategies, including wound irrigation and prophylactic antibiotic use. Delayed wound closure may be necessary to mitigate infection risks.

This educational activity equips healthcare professionals with updated knowledge and skills to manage animal bites effectively. Clinicians learn to assess wound severity, prevent infection through evidence-based practices, and implement optimal treatment protocols, including prophylactic antibiotics like amoxicillin-clavulanate and vaccination strategies. Collaboration within an interprofessional team is highlighted, which enhances care delivery, ensures thorough evaluation and timely intervention, and ultimately improves patient outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  •

Differentiate between superficial and high-risk wounds requiring advanced intervention in animal bites.

  • Screen patients for signs of infection, tetanus risk, and rabies exposure following animal bites.

  • Implement appropriate wound irrigation, debridement techniques, and delayed closure when indicated in animal bites.

  • Identify interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to advance the treatment of animal bites and improve outcomes.
