Activity Description

This continuing medical education (CME) activity delves into the intricate landscape of periodontal diseases, emphasizing the role of periodontal surgery in cases where non-surgical interventions fall short. Periodontitis affects approximately 11% of adults globally and may lead to significant morbidity, tooth loss, and reduced quality of life. This program underscores the importance of early detection and appropriate treatment. The activity will explore the nuances of comprehensive periodontal therapy, beginning with non-surgical measures like scaling, root planing, and oral hygiene instruction. Participants will gain insights into addressing local and systemic risk factors during the disease control phase, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.

Furthermore, the activity will guide healthcare professionals through the critical phase of treatment planning, which can involve non-periodontal treatments, such as root canal therapy and strategic tooth removal. The success of non-surgical periodontal treatment, evaluated 6 to 8 weeks after scaling and root planing, will be examined based on critical probing depth criteria. The program will provide a comprehensive overview of periodontal surgery's pivotal role in definitively treating sites with probing depths of 6 mm or more, and in preventing complications such as abscesses and continued tissue destruction. By highlighting the interprofessional nature of periodontal care, this course will equip participants with the knowledge to manage patients with periodontitis collaboratively, improving oral health and overall well-being.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of dentists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  •  Apply anatomical concepts, such as bone defect morphology and principles of flap design, to periodontal surgery.

  •  Develop a step-by-step plan for procedures focusing on removing gingival tissue, accessing root surfaces, and bone contouring.

  • Evaluate periodontal surgery procedures that aim to regenerate lost periodontal tissues and treat mucogingival defects.

  • Implement strategies to reduce systemic health risks from periodontitis with other healthcare team members, including dentists, periodontists, dental hygienists, physicians, and nurse practitioners.
