Activity Description

Evaluation and management of pain at the end of life is a multifold issue with a deep impact on the patient's quality of life. With a better understanding of pain management's key principles at the end of life, caregivers can contribute to providing comfort and solace to their dying patients. This activity outlines evaluating and managing pain at the end of life with pharmacological and nonpharmacological measures. It highlights the role of the interprofessional team in managing patients at the end of their life.


Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Assess the pathophysiology of pain at the end of life.

  • Identify both pharmacological and nonpharmacological measures of pain management in the dying patient.

  • Evaluate the signs of pain and discomfort and provide effective treatment.

I think this assessment needs reviewed. answer to #1--- in an elderly patient with decreased oral intake of fluids, high fiber in the diet can make constipation worse. #5--there should be consideration to the placement of a venting G tube, this is pretty standard offering with data that this improves quality of life and decreases days in hospital.
