Pseudoseizures or psychogenic non-epileptic spells (PNES) are characterized by events mostly resembling generalized seizures without EEG finding. They are highly associated with conversion disorders.
Cognitive behavioral therapy may be effective. Treating any associated depression or anxiety is of a great importance. No antiepileptic medication is needed.
There may be a history of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.
Intravenous benzodiazepines and other anti-epileptic medications are not useful in psychogenic non-epileptic seizures and are to be avoided because of side-effects.
