Cleft lip is best closed 2 to 4 months after birth. The rule of 10s is usually 10 pounds, 10 weeks, and 10 g of hemoglobin prior to closure.
Cleft palate, on the other hand, is usually closed at 6 to 12 months.
Babies with cleft palate often develop recurrent middle ear infections that may lead to total hearing loss.
A tympanostomy tube is often inserted into the eardrum to help aerate the ear and maintain hearing.
