Which of these medications is contraindicated with foods containing tyramine?
Select Your Answer:
Tranylcypromine is a reversible MAO inhibitor indicated for depression.
The drug may be used to treat psychotic depressive states, such as bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, and severe reactive depression.
Patients must avoid foods containing tyramine as they can result in a hypertensive crisis. Medications such as SSRIs, SNRIs, sympathomimetics, anesthetics, bupropion, and buspirone can all cause this complication.
Aged cheeses, red wine, fava beans, avocados, cured fish, soy sauce, and chocolate all contain tyramine.
