What is the most common reason for performing a liver transplant in North America in adults?

The most common indication of liver transplant is hepatitis C virus, followed by alcoholic liver disease, biliary cirrhosis, acute liver failure, metabolic liver disease and others.
The most common cause of death beyond the transplant period is infection, rejection and malignancy.
Acute liver rejection happens in nearly 30-70 percent of cases after 1-2 weeks. It typically presents with jaundice, abnormal liver function, fever and eosinophilia.
Chronic graft rejection occur in 5% of cases and diagnosis is made by liver biopsy.
