A markedly-underweight 16-year-old female with yellowish skin, hair loss, and amenorrhea has a fear of becoming "fat." What is the most likely diagnosis?
Select Your Answer:
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that involves restricted intake, weight loss, metabolic and physiologic changes, and altered body image.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5) classifies the severity of disease based on body mass index (BMI); mild is a BMI of greater than 17, moderate 16 to 17, severe 15 to 16, and extreme less than 15.
Many of the symptoms of anorexia nervosa may overlap with those of bulimia nervosa. Whereas those with anorexia are always underweight, bulimics have normal or slightly increased BMI.
Long-term complications include anemia, cardiac problems, osteoporosis, amenorrhea, decreased testosterone, gastrointestinal problems, electrolyte abnormalities, kidney problems, and alopecia.
