Activity Description

Thermal burns are a significant cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality. They can lead to debilitating, lifelong injuries and have serious psychological and economic impacts. With proper treatment, successful functional and emotional recovery is possible. This activity reviews the basic approaches to burn care, underlying pathophysiology of thermal injuries and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in successful post-operative care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe how to evaluate a patient with a thermal burn injury.
  • Describe how to calculate fluid resuscitation rates using both the Parkland formula and the modified Brooke formula.
  • Explain the basic principles of thermal burn wound care.
  • Success in burn care requires a well-coordinated, interprofessional team approach. Describe how different team members can contribute to caring for patients with thermal burn injuries.
