Activity Description

The spleen, a vital component of the immune system, plays multiple crucial roles in the body, including immune response modulation and blood filtration, and serving as a key site for the production of antibodies and blood cells, while also acting as a reservoir for platelets. However, conditions like asplenism, whether complete or functional, can compromise these functions, increasing the risk of infections, especially those caused by encapsulated bacteria. "Asplenism" refers to the complete absence of the spleen, which can be due to congenital conditions, surgical removal, or certain diseases. On the other hand, functional asplenism is characterized by the spleen's reduced or impaired function without the organ's complete absence. Functional asplenism can increase the risk of certain infections, particularly those caused by polysaccharide-encapsulated bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and other Streptococcal species, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella.

Participants in this activity explore the multifaceted nature of functional abdominal pain syndrome (FAPS), learning about its clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, and treatment options. The course covers various approaches to evaluation, including history taking, physical examination, and diagnostic testing, along with the importance of ruling out other organic causes of abdominal pain. Learners gain insights into the management of FAPS, which may include lifestyle modifications, dietary interventions, psychological therapies, and pharmacological treatments. Through interprofessional collaboration, clinicians enhance their competence in addressing the complex needs of patients with FAPS, fostering improved communication and coordination among healthcare team members to provide comprehensive and patient-centered care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the underlying factors that may lead to functional asplenia, a condition characterized by the reduced or absent function of the spleen.

  • Screen patients at risk for functional asplenism, including those with underlying conditions or a history of splenectomy.

  • Review the management options available for functional asplenism and be able to implement them appropriately.

  • Explain interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to diagnose and advance the management of functional asplenism to improve patient quality of life, longevity, and outcomes.
