Activity Description

By 2020, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is expected to be the third leading cause of death according to the epidemiological data. Although the prognosis of affected patients is improving with new treatment modalities, the mortality in these patients is still high. Tobacco smoking accounts for most cases of COPD in developed nations. This activity reviews the causes of COPD, the options for evaluation, treatment, and prevention, and discusses the role of the interprofessional team in managing and educating patients with COPD.

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

• Explain the association between tobacco use and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
• Describe the association between environmental pollution and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
• Summarize how acid-base disorders influence chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
