Activity Description

Alkali toxicity is a rare condition leading to significant medical complications in both adults and children. The activity covers multiple exposure routes of alkali toxicity, including dermal, ophthalmological, and oral, specifically emphasizing predominantly intentional oral ingestions. This activity focuses explicitly on assessing and managing alkali toxicity, highlighting ingestion, which is the most common route of exposure. Clinical presentation, evaluation techniques, and appropriate management strategies for alkali exposures are presented. Moreover, this activity highlights the crucial significance of an interprofessional healthcare team in effectively treating patients following alkali ingestion incidents.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate between alkali and acid exposures, considering the distinct management approaches required for each type of caustic substance.

  • Implement timely and evidence-based management strategies for alkali toxicity, including airway management, decontamination, and supportive care, based on the severity of the exposure.

  • Apply the Zargar-modified endoscopic classification system to grade the extent of alkali injury during endoscopy, guiding further treatment decisions.

  • Collaborate with an interprofessional healthcare team, including toxicologists, gastroenterologists, and ophthalmologists, to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care for patients with alkali toxicity.
